With the winter season around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how to care for your pond during those cold months. Here are a few tips to ensure your pond is maintained and healthy:
Water Level
Even though the evaporation rate is much lower in the winter, it is still important to maintain the appropriate water level in your pond or water feature. This may prove more difficult if you already have your frost proofs on your outside faucets. It is not uncommon to have to top of your pond a few times in the winter.
Ice
In our zone, we don’t have to worry too much about ice dams and a hard freeze over our ponds. Deicers aren’t usually necessary but depending on how the season goes may be a good backup to have in case we get one of those out of the blue winter storms. Therefore, many people choose to keep their features running year round. As pond owners, we do! One reason is to maintain that circulation of water. Running water does not freeze so as long as you keep that water circulating through your stream or biofilter, there is little chance of that happening.
Shutting Down the System
If you do shut down your system for winter, make sure you keep your fish healthy with an aerator and pond de-icer since you do not have recirculating water. Also, remember once the water hits below 50 degrees, stop feeding your fish.
Be on the lookout! Our maintenance package flyers are being mailed out this week. We provide bi-weekly and monthly maintenance packages to ensure your pond is naturally balanced and low-maintenance for you.
